'OHANA AND 'AINA: CONNECTING FAMILY, FARMING AND FREEDOM
16-year-old Jade Onaka explores her family’s farming history in Kona, Hawai’i, uncovering how traditional practices once sustained the islands for centuries. As Hawai’i now imports 90% of its food, Jade learns how Indigenous systems could offer a path to a more sustainable future.
A CULTURAL APPROACH TO NATIVE HAWAIIAN MENTAL HEALTH
Mental health challenges disproportionately affect kānaka in Hawai’i, contributing to issues like suicide, substance use, and homelessness. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is pushing for culturally-based mental health services, as research shows these programs are four times more effective. By reconnecting people with their culture, they aim to support Native Hawaiian well-being.
